Leaf Shadows: a Haiku reading with Japanese music

Over 150 people enjoyed an evening of haiku readings and Japanese music on November 19, 2010. The Embassy of Japan was pleased to co-host this event with the Japan Foundation and KaDo Ottawa, a local organization dedicated to the study and practice of writing Japanese poetry, including haiku. Ms. Debbie Danbrook and Ms. Catriona Sturton performed on a variety of instruments, including traditional Japanese instruments known as the shakuhachi and the shamisen.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Ishikawa recognized the hard work and dedication of the members of KaDo Ottawa, stating that they are also ambassadors of Japanese culture. “Your efforts have transformed the haiku from being a strictly Japanese form of poetry...it is now a global form of literature.”
