Yukio Hatoyama elected new PM

 

1. On Wednesday September 16, Mr. Yukio HATOYAMA, the leader of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), was designated by the Diet and appointed by the Emperor of Japan as Japan’s 93rd Prime Minister.

With the exception of a brief period 16 years ago, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) had held power prior to this election for more than half a century.

 

Mr. HATOYAMA is 62 years old. He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1969 and received a Ph.D. in Managerial engineering from Stanford University in 1976. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1986 and has been the leader of DPJ since last May after succeeding Mr. Ichiro OZAWA.

 

2. Mr. HATOYAMA also formed a cabinet, establishing a coalition government with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the People's New Party (PNP).
