Applying to JET is a two stage process. The first stage involves filling out and submitting the application form (generally available as of Mid-September each year). This includes a number of questionnaires as well as an essay and a copy of your university transcripts. Also required are two letters of reference. Applicants who are accepted to the programme must submit a valid university degree, the results of a medical check by a qualified physician and a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector check prior to their departure. Successful applicants must also hold a valid Canadian passport.
Following the deadline in mid-November, the application packets are evaluated. Applicants who pass this first stage are then granted an interview (usually held in February). The interviews are held in Ottawa or in one of the following cities under the jurisdiction of the Japanese consulates: Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto or Montreal. Please note that from this second stage on, the city in which you do your interview will become your departure city for flying to Japan.
All interviewed candidates will be notified in April as to whether they have been accepted on the programme or not. Candidates who have been accepted are either on the Short List, meaning a definite placement in Japan , or on the Alternate List, equivalent to a waiting list. Should a Short List candidate decline their position then an Alternate will be contacted and offered the position.
Departure for Japan occurs either at the end of July or the beginning of August, depending on the departure city. Prior to departure the embassy and consulates organize orientation sessions designed to familiarize the new JETs with the programme and their responsibilities as well as with the culture and language of Japan. The day you arrive in Japan is the day your one year contract begins. JETs who are interested in staying for a second year need not go through the application process again. An option to renew is offered by the Contracting organization.
Disqualification from the Short or Alternate list can occur should any of the required documents not be submitted by the expected deadlines or should the Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check indicate that the applicant has had trouble with the law. |
