Opening Ceremony of ‘Eye on the Enlightenment: John Cooper Robinson – Photographs from Meiji-Taisho Japan’

On Saturday January 30th, 2016 the exhibition ‘Eye on the Enlightenment: John Cooper Robinson – Photographs from Meiji-Taisho Japan’ organized by the Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and the Cooper Robinson family started at the Embassy for two weeks until February 14.

After Ambassador  Monji’s opening remarks, Jill Cooper Robinson spoke, recounting the journey for her to bring the collection of photos from about 100 years ago to light once more and preserve it as an important historical document for future generations.

She then presented the Ambassador with a print of one of her great-grandfather’s pictures taken in 1921.

Following the speeches, a short film of an interview of Eleanor Kerr, granddaughter of the photographer, made to accompany the exhibition was screened.
