On February 10th 2016, the Embassy of Japan hosted the lecture ‘Cooper Robinson and Global Photography in the Late Nineteenth Century’, the second lecture accompanying the photography exhibit ‘Eye on the Enlightenment - John Cooper Robinson: Photographs from Meiji-Taisho Japan’.
The lecturer was Dr. Carol Payne, Associate Professor of Art History at Carleton University.
Deputy Head of Mission, Minister Karube gave opening remarks.
Dr. Payne contextualised John Cooper Robinson’s photographic work with comparisons to contemporary developments in photography and contrasted his sensitive, amateur images with the staged, theatrical ones produced in commercial photo studios of the time.
