Lecture: Cooper Robinson and Global Photography in the Late Nineteenth  Century 
  
  
  
On February 10th 2016, the Embassy of Japan hosted the  lecture ‘Cooper Robinson and Global Photography in the Late Nineteenth Century’, the second lecture accompanying  the photography exhibit ‘Eye on the Enlightenment - John Cooper  Robinson: Photographs from Meiji-Taisho Japan’. 
   
  The lecturer was Dr. Carol Payne, Associate Professor of Art History at  Carleton University. 
   
  Deputy Head of Mission, Minister Karube gave opening remarks. 
  
Dr. Payne contextualised John Cooper Robinson’s  photographic work with comparisons to contemporary developments in photography  and contrasted his sensitive, amateur images with the staged, theatrical ones  produced in commercial photo studios of the time.
