The 27th Japanese Language Speech Contest in Ottawa
On Saturday, February 27, 2016, the Organizing Committee for the Japanese Language Speech Contest in Ottawa, in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan, was pleased to present the 27th Japanese Language Speech Contest in Ottawa at the Embassy of Japan’s auditorium. The organizers thanked the Japan Foundation and Mitsui Canada for their assistance with this event, and wished success to all the participants.
This year, participants who are currently enrolled in universities and Japanese language schools, including Carleton University, University of Ottawa, Queen’s University, and Ottawa Japanese Language School participated in the event. A total of 27 contestants expressed themselves through impassioned speeches in Japanese.
In his opening remarks, Minister Karube mentioned that he himself knows how effort in second language acquisition can bring great benefits, both professionally and in person to person exchange, “When we learn a language, we not only learn vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, but also culture and new ways of thinking.”
Contestants were divided into four categories: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Open. The hosting university, where the National Japanese Speech Contest will take place this year, is the University of Toronto. The 1st prize winners of each category will represent the Ottawa region and participate in the final competition on Saturday, March 19, 2016.
