Japanese Maritime Squadron to Visit Halifax

The Consulate General of Japan at Montreal is pleased to announce the upcoming visit by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Japanese Training Squadron.  The squadron, currently on a four month long intercontinental tour, is set to arrive in Halifax on the morning of Thursday August 11 and will remain in the port until the morning of Sunday August 14.  During their stay, the squadron’s three ships and approximately 700 sailors look forward to welcoming local residents to visit the ships and also experience performances by both their world class brass and taiko drum bands.

At noon on August 12, in conjunction with the Halifax International Busker Festival, the public is invited to a performance by “Shozuidaiko,” the squadron’s taiko drum group on the water side of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.  Having already performed in many countries around the world, “Shozuidaiko” is sure to impress the crowd with their thunderous drums and captivating performance.

At 4:00 pm on the same day, at the invitation of Mayor Peter Kelly of the Halifax Regional Municipality, the squadron’s brass band is proud to offer a performance in Grand Parade Square in front of City Hall.  All those interested are encouraged to take in this exciting performance.

In addition, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force extends, with pleasure, an invitation to the public to board “ ASAGIRI ” as well as “ MINEYUKI ” for a tour.  The ship "ASAGIRI” will be open to visitors from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on August 12 and the ship “MINEYUKI ” will be open as well from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on August 13.  Access is from the HMCS Scotian [located on Lower Water Street].  Registration is not required.

The squadron is under the command of Rear Admiral Umio Otsuka.  The squadron will be arriving from Norfolk, Virginia and subsequently departing for Tampa, Florida.
