Ambassador Ishikane’s Official Visit to the Province of Prince Edward Island

H.E. Kimihiro Ishikane, Ambassador of Japan, and his spouse, Mrs. Kaoru Ishikane, paid an official visit to the province of Prince Edward Island from July12 to 14, 2018. Prince Edward Island is 5,660 square kilometers in area, and the population has grown to152,000 people as of 2017. There are approximately 170 Japanese nationals living in Prince Edward Island. Prince Edward Island is very popular with Japanese tourists, as the location of “Anne of Green Gables” by L.M. Montgomery.
On July 12, in Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island, Ambassador and Mrs. Ishikane met with the Honourable Antoinette Perry, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, the Honourable Wade Maclauchlan, Premier of Prince Edward Island, the Honourable Francis Back Watts, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island and His Worship Clifford J. Lee, Mayor of the City of Charlottetown. During the meetings, they exchanged views on how to further strengthen cooperation between Japan and Canada/ Prince Edward Island on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, as well as their cultural and economic relations. In addition, Ambassador and Mrs. Ishikane visited the University of Prince Edward Island and discussed with Dr. Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, President of the University.
On July 13, Ambassador and Mrs. Ishikane attended a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the latest plant expansion of Sekisui Diagnostics P.E.I. Inc., which produces clinical diagnostic products in Charlottetown. Premier Maclauchlan honoured this ceremony with his presence, and many senior executives of Sekisui Medical and Sekisui Diagnostics from Japan and U.S.A also attended the ceremony.
On the same day, Ambassador and Mrs. Ishikane also attended a roundtable with some representatives of the provincial government, including the Honourable Robert Henderson, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries; and they visited the famous Green Gables House.
