Japanese Ambassador’s Award conferred upon Oto-Wa Taiko

2020/10/14
On September 30, 2020, Ambassador Kawamura conferred the Ambassador’s Award to Oto-Wa Taiko on the occasion of their 30th Anniversary.

For three decades Oto-Wa Taiko has contributed to spreading the Japanese art of taiko-style drumming to Ottawa. Through their many performances they have entertained the public with this distinctly Japanese form of music. Their dedication and hard work has helped tie our two nations together through the invisible thread of cultural exchange. The conferment of this award signifies their contribution to enhancing mutual understanding and friendly relations between Japan and Canada.

At a small private gathering due to the novel coronavirus situation, Ambassador Kawamura thanked Oto-Wa Taiko for their many years of practice and cooperation with the Embassy, noting their past charitable work in raising funds for disaster-struck regions of Japan. He also congratulated them on the success of their many public performances, including last year’s performance on Parliament Hill on Canada Day.

Following the Ambassador’s remarks Oto-Wa Taiko gave an inspiring performance which was streamed live via the Embassy of Japan’s Facebook page and via Zoom and seen by over 3500 people. Ambassador Kawamura expressed his hope that such a virtual performance could cheer people up during such difficult time.
