2025/10/1
On October 1, the Embassy, with the collaboration of the Japan Foundation, Toronto, screened the film “Cinematic Liars of Asahi-za” at a Japanese Film Night held at the ByTowne Cinema in Ottawa.

Prior to the screening, Minister Hideaki Ishii, Deputy Head of Mission, delivered opening remarks and said that movie theatres are not just places of entertainment, but also important hubs that support the spirit of communities and create connections.

“Cinematic Liars of Asahi-za” is directed by Yuki Tanada. It takes place in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan and follows people who struggle to rebuild “Asahi-za”, a movie theatre that is closing down.

About 200 movie lovers enjoyed the film at the ByTowne Cinema, which is known as one of Ottawa’s best venues for independent and international films like Asahi-za.
