Bonsai Expo 2025

2025/9/21
On September 20 and 21, the Embassy co-hosted “Bonsai Expo 2025” with the Ottawa Bonsai Society (OBS) at the Information and Culture Centre. OBS was established in 1984 to promote interest and understanding in the art form of bonsai and they have over 90 members now.

At the opening ceremony on September 20th, Ambassador Kanji Yamanouchi mentioned the shared national characteristics of Japan and Canada, who value nature and harmony with nature, and expressed his respect to OBS for their great contributions to promoting bonsai in Ottawa over 40 years.
Ambassador Yamanouchi also referred to the ongoing Osaka Expo 2025, and he expressed his hope that Canada will participate in the International Horticultural Expo which is scheduled to be held in Yokohama in 2027.
Mr. Vianney Leduc, President of OBS expressed their gratitude for the Embassy’s support for the OBS over the years.

At OBS’s 20th exhibition at the Embassy, about 1,000 people visited over two days including Mr. Steeve Lavoie, M.P., member of the Canada-Japan Inter-Parliamentary Group, and Ambassadors and High Commissioners of the Asia-Pacific Group of the Diplomatic Corps, of which Ambassador Yamanouchi presently serves as Dean. Visitors appreciated over 30 beautiful bonsai trees.
On both days, demonstrations were held to offer an opportunity to show the process of making a store-bought tree a bonsai and further increased visitors’ interest.
