2024 Autumn Conferment of Decoration Ceremony (Ambassador Robert G. Wright)

On January 22, Ambassador Yamanouchi conferred upon Mr. Robert G. Wright, former Ambassador Canada to Japan, the decoration of The Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star at a ceremony held at the official residence of the Ambassador as part of the 2024 Autumn Conferment of Decoration on Foreign Nationals. Ambassador Wright, who served as Deputy Minister of International Trade and Economic Development at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade for about six years and served as Ambassador of Canada to Japan for about four years, has made a significant contribution to profound friendly bilateral relations and promoting mutual understanding between Japan and Canada, including economic relations.
 
At the ceremony, Ambassador Yamanouchi delivered a congratulatory address before conferring the certificate of award and decoration to Ambassador Wright, which was followed by Ambassador Wright's acceptance speech.
Mr. John Weekes, former Ambassador to the GATT and to the World Trade Organization and Canadian Chief Negotiator for the North American Free Trade Agreement, gave a remark and toast.
 
The Government of Japan confers decorations to foreign nationals who have made significant contributions to promote friendly relations and mutual understanding with Japan. Decorations were conferred upon 87 foreign nationals (including 3 recipients in Canada) in autumn 2024.
