2024/6/18
On June 18, Ambassador YAMANOUCHI Kanji conferred upon Mr. Thomas d’Aquino, Founding Chief Executive Officer and Distinguished Lifetime Member, Business Council of Canada, the Order of The Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star at a ceremony held at the official residence of the Ambassador as part of the 2024 Spring Conferment of Decoration on Foreign Nationals. Mr. d'Aquino, who had been CEO of the Business Council of Canada since 1981, has contributed greatly to the promotion of economic exchange between Japan and Canada by keeping the meetings of the Japanese and Canadian business communities going for nearly 30 years, with many participants at each meeting.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Yamanouchi delivered a congratulatory address before conferring the certificate and decoration of the Order to Mr. d'Aquino, which was followed by Mr. d’Aquino’s acceptance speech.
Remarks were given by Mr. Leonard Edwards, former Canadian Ambassador to Japan, and the Right Honourable Joe Clark, former Canadian Prime Minister.
In closing, Mr. John Hannaford, Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet, gave a toast.
The Government of Japan confers decorations to foreign nationals who have made significant contributions to promote friendly relations and mutual understanding with Japan. Decorations were conferred upon 101 foreign nationals (including 7 recipients such as Mr. d’Aquino in Canada) in spring 2024.
