Japanese Pottery Technique - Nerikomi Event

2024/2/7
On February 7th, the Embassy of Japan welcomed Ms. Eiko Maeda, a pottery artist living in the Niagara region, and hosted a lecture and a demonstration on Nerikomi, a Japanese technique of pottery, at the Canterbury High School and the Embassy’s Information and Culture Centre.

Ambassador Kanji Yamanouchi gave the opening remarks for the lecture at the Information and Culture Centre and said that culture not only brings people together but also promotes bilateral relations between Japan and Canada as well as strengthens friendships.

During the demonstration, Ms. Maeda demonstrated how to create her works, and explained the beauty of Japanese culture that can be seen in pottery using Japanese techniques, as well as the elegance that is not necessarily overly ornate. In addition, Ms. Maeda introduced her experience in creating works that made her realize that Japanese art is deeply connected to Japanese history and culture. The participants admired Ms. Maeda's works on display for this event and listened with interest to her explanations while she conducted the demonstration. Throughout the event there was also a lively Q&A between Ms. Maeda and the participants.

The event was attended by approximately a total of 160 pottery fans and people with interest in Japanese culture. Favorable feedback was received from the audience who expressed how much they were moved by the beauty of Japanese pottery. Furthermore, they said that they were able to deepen their understanding of Japanese art by seeing that Japanese culture is also reflected in the precision of the process of creating it.
