Virtual Bento Class: Fun and Kawaii Japanese Character Bento Box “kyaraben”
2022/1/27
On January 27, the Embassy of Japan hosted an online kyaraben, Japanese character bento making event titled "Virtual Bento Class: Fun and Kawaii Japanese Character Bento Box!". We were pleased to invite New York City based Japanese candy sculpture artist Candy5 who has been actively promoting the artistic and amazing tradition of Japanese candy art amezaiku in the United States and abroad over many years. In this event, Candy5, who is also known as a kyaraben artist, introduced the step by step procedure to prepare different kyaraben at home using everyday ingredients available in Canada.
Ambassador Kawamura began the event by giving opening remarks, in which he introduced that today's kyaraben have reached the realm of art, and not only does it promote a healthy diet for children by incorporating various ingredients, but it also creates a fun way to communicate at home when parents and children make them together.
During the event, Candy5 showed how to make a "Hello Kitty" rice ball, "Rilakkuma" character lying in the curry sauce, and a kyaraben depicting the manga "Demon Slayer". It was very entertaining to watch them being made. In the event, participants had an opportunity to ask questions to Candy5. Some of the questions asked were how to make a thin omelette and the type of rice suitable for making kyaraben.
Japanese lunch box is often referred to as Bento Box overseas and it is gradually spreading to the rest of the world as a traditional culture unique to Japan. Through this event, we were able to convey the charm and fun aspects of kyaraben.
