Lecture on “The Current Security Environment Facing Japan and Canada, and Future Prospects”
2026/10/14
On October 14, the Embassy of Japan in Canada co-hosted a lecture entitled “The Current Security Environment Facing Japan and Canada, and Future Prospects” with the University of Ottawa.
Following welcome remarks by Professor Alexandra Gheciu, Director of the University of Ottawa’s Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS), Minister Hideaki Ishii of the Embassy delivered opening remarks. He noted that we live in an era in which economic security takes centre stage in statecraft, and expressed his hope that the lecture would provide a valuable opportunity to explore ways to strengthen Japan-Canada cooperation in the field of economic security.
Professor Kazuto Suzuki, Professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Tokyo and Director of the Institute of Geoeconomics, then delivered a lecture. He analyzed and explained the current state of the international community, which lacks global leadership, from the perspective of economic security. He also discussed opportunities for Japan-Canada cooperation in this field.
This was followed by a question-and-answer session moderated by Professor Scott Simon of the University of Ottawa.
Professor Suzuki also delivered lectures in Toronto and Calgary.
