Virtual Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition: Ikebana and Haiku Poetry

2020/11/10
From October 17 to November 1, the Embassy of Japan held an online Sogetsu Ikebana exhibition in collaboration with the Sogetsu School of Ikebana Ottawa Branch. The theme of this year's exhibit was “Ikebana and Haiku Poetry”. The Sogetsu’s annual exhibition is held at the Information and Culture Centre every year, but due to coronavirus pandemic, the exhibition was held virtually.

Next year, the Ottawa Branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana will celebrate its 25th anniversary. In his video greeting, Ambassador Kawamura expressed his gratitude for Sogetsu’s contribution to the promotion of Japanese culture in Ottawa throughout the years. Furthermore, he referred to the theme of this year’s exhibition “Ikebana and Haiku Poetry” and noted that flowers and nature have always had a big role in haiku poetry writing in Japan as they are part of human existence and add a richness to life.

On October 22 and 29, Mrs. McCaughey, Director of the Ottawa Branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana presented virtual tours of the exhibition. She gave background information on each arrangement inspired by haiku poetry. The tours allowed participants to enjoy ikebana and deepen their understanding of Japanese culture. Throughout the tours, many questions from the public were also asked and answered.
