Virtual Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition: Ikebana in Motion

2021/6/28
From June 12 to 27, the Embassy of Japan held an online Sogetsu Ikebana exhibition “Ikebana in Motion” in collaboration with the Sogetsu School of Ikebana Ottawa Branch. The Sogetsu annual exhibition is held at the Embassy of Japan in Canada every year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic this year’s (and last year’s) exhibition was held virtually with 30 different flower arrangements that expressed “motion”.

This year the Ottawa Branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana celebrates its 25th anniversary. In his video greeting Ambassador Kawamura expressed his gratitude for their contribution to the promotion of Japanese flower arrangement in Ottawa and cultural exchange between Japan and Canada throughout the years.

On June 17 and 24, Ms. McCaughey, Director of the Ottawa Branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, led virtual tours of the exhibition, giving lectures on the history of Ikebana and Ikebana chapters, followed by detailed explanation on each flower arrangement. The tours were followed by questions and answers from the public, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of Ikebana and Japanese culture.
