Eitetsu Hayashi Japanese TAIKO Drum Concert with Eitetsu FU-UN no Kai

On August 19th, in collaboration with the Japan Foundation, the Canadian Museum of History and the Ottawa Japanese Community Association, the Embassy of Japan organized a concert by the world known Japanese taiko drummer Mr. Eitetsu Hayashi and the ensemble of his young drummers, Eitetsu FU-UN-no Kai. This concert was part of the group’s Canadian tour celebrating the 90th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations.

The event took place at the Canadian Museum of History theatre. All tickets were sold out in advance, showing a strong interest in Japanese culture in the National Capital Region.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Ishikane said that music has the power to resonate with people from different cultures and nationalities, and expressed his joy in celebrating the 90th anniversary with Japan’s premier solo taiko drummer, Mr. Hayashi. The audience was deeply impressed by the sophisticated and powerful performance that lasted for two hours. After the concert, a cocktail reception was held for invited guests.

The following day, on August 20th, Mr. Hayashi and members of Eitetsu FU-UN no Kai gave a workshop for a local taiko group. 16 people from Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston took part in the workshop. It was a wonderful opportunity for the participants to learn warm-up exercises, lecture and practical skills directly from Master Hayashi.
