Signing of the Letter of Understanding Concerning Polar Research Cooperation
On June 6th, 2016, the signing ceremony for the Letter of Understanding (LoU) Concerning Cooperation in Polar Research between Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) and the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) took place at Global Affairs Canada. Acting Ambassador Karube attended the ceremony.
The LoU was signed by Dr. David J. Scott, President and CEO of POLAR, and Dr. Kazuyuki Shiraishi, Director General of the NIPR. Under the LoU, Canada and Japan will conduct joint research at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) in Cambridge Bay, which will open in 2017.
In his remarks, acting Ambassador Karube congratulated the two countries on launching a new bilateral initiative for research cooperation in science and technology this year, which marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Canada-Japan Science and Technology Agreement. Dr. Scott and Dr. Shiraishi expressed their hope and expectation for future research cooperation.
