On January 28, Carleton University and the Embassy of Japan co-hosted “Japan Night” at Carleton University. The event was attended by more than 150 people and Japanese culture was introduced to participants such as students who are studying Japanese as well as Japanese students living in Ottawa and other related guests.

Dr. Jacob Kovalio of Carleton University and Minister Fumio Yawata of the Embassy of Japan delivered opening remarks. Minister Yawata reiterated his gratitude for all the support sent by Carleton University after the Great East Japan Earthquake and also explained the reconstruction efforts in the affected areas.

During the event, visitors enjoyed viewing displays of Japanese culture as well as demonstrations such as how to wear a kimono, tea ceremony, kendo and iaido as well as had a haiku contest. Furthermore, booths were set up where visitors had the opportunity to try making sushi, tako-yaki (octopus balls), origami, karuta (traditional Japanese playing cards competition), and calligraphy. All the participants enjoyed experiencing the various aspects of Japanese culture in a friendly atmosphere.
