Katsura Sunshine - Rakugo
On September 19 and 20, the Embassy of Japan was pleased to host Katsura Sunshine and Dr. Chiho Kitagawa for a performance of traditional Japanese comedic storytelling known as Rakugo. Katsura Sunshine performed two shows, the first of which was to a full house at the 4th Stage at the National Arts Centre on the evening of September 19. He also performed for students at the University of Ottawa’s Theatre Department the following day, on the morning of September 20. This performance was followed by a lively question and answer session with many students.
Ambassador Ishikawa and Minister Yawata made opening remarks to start the events at the National Arts Centre and the University of Ottawa, respectively. They both explained that Rakugo has brought laughter to generations of Japanese since the 17th century. By practicing Rakugo, Katsura Sunshine is taking part in a cultural exchange that has been a cornerstone of successful Japan-Canada bilateral relations. Furthermore, they expressed their gratitude for the Embassy being able to host another Rakugo show this year following Katsura Sunshine’s first highly successful performance in Ottawa last year.
The audiences in both venues seemed to greatly enjoy the event as there was much laughter. The positive audience response served as a reminder that humour is universal and transcends both time and national boundaries. Many people stayed to meet Katsura Sunshine after the shows.
Katsura Sunshine was interviewed on CBC Radio, “Ottawa Morning” (http://www.cbc.ca/ottawamorning/) on September 20.
