Sake Tasting
On May 16, the Embassy of Japan and the Canada-Japan Society of Ottawa (CJSO) held a Sake Tasting event in the auditorium of the Embassy of Japan. The event was attended by the members of the CJSO and people who were interested in learning about Japanese sake.
Minister Yawata made opening remarks and mentioned that Japanese sake is deeply ingrained in Japanese history and culture and this Sake Tasting event provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Japanese culture. Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude for the donation to relief efforts from the CJSO following the Great East Japan Earthquake last year and also expressed appreciation to them for continuously promoting the friendship between Canada and Japan.
With extensive knowledge of Japanese Sake, Mr. Sam Toma, President of the CJSO and Mrs. Yumiko Tsunakawa, Director and Dinner Coordinator of the CJSO, talked about a wide range of issues related to Japanese sake, including: its history, the production process, and the various kinds of sake produced. Audience members were told about and shown pictures of sake production in the disaster-hit Tohoku region, where producers have been working hard to restore Japanese Sake making. Furthermore, audience members were eager to participate in a question and answer session and various questions on sake, which has been gaining popularity among Canadians, were asked. All the participants, from first-timers to sake enthusiasts, enjoyed the taste of the various kinds of sake and were greatly fascinated by them.
