Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibit 2012
On February 25 – 26, the Sogetsu School of Ikebana held its annual exhibition at the Embassy of Japan. The theme of this year’s exhibit was “Dance of the Flowers”. During the two-day exhibit, more than 540 visitors came to view the various flower arrangements which demonstrated a high level of interest in Ikebana in Ottawa.
As expressed in the theme of this year’s exhibit “Dance of the Flowers”, flower arrangements of truly dynamic design were displayed and many visitors were fascinated by their beauty and rich expression.
Ms. Mikiko Mitchell, Director of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Ottawa, and Ms. Jane Metcalfe, Exhibition Chair of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Ottawa, delivered opening remarks. Representing the Embassy of Japan were Minister Fumio Yawata and his wife. In his opening remarks, Minister Yawata mentioned that beautiful flower arrangements remind viewers of the arrival of spring. Furthermore, Minister Yawata spoke that this spring in Japan will be an especially poignant one as the country observes the one year anniversary of the the Great East Japan Earthquake. He further mentioned that with the help of friends like Canada, Japan continues to make steady progress in its recovery and reiterated his gratitude for all the support from Canada after the disaster.
