Concert by Japanese percussion artists and Canadian Children’s Choirs

On March 3rd, the Ottawa Chamberfest, the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation co-hosted a concert by a group led by a marimba artist, Ms. Mutsuko Fujii (along with: Ms. Haruka Fujii, Ms. Rika Fujii, Mr. Ryan Scott and Mr. Greg Oh). The group performed with the Ottawa Children’s Choir and the Toronto Children’s Chorus at Dominion-Chalmers United Church in Ottawa. Mrs. Ishikawa and Minister Yawata from the Embassy of Japan were in attendance.

During the concert, pieces by Japanese composers such as Toru Takemitsu and Akira Miyoshi were played with percussion instruments. Following those pieces, the Ottawa Children’s Choir and the Toronto Children’s Chorus performed “Hotaru Koi”, “Letters to God”, “Yamagara Diary” and “Hurusato” in Japanese. As a part of the performance, they played a percussion instrument made with sanukite and other various unique instruments creatively made with different materials. The audience enjoyed the unique melodies played on those percussion instruments and were charmed by the pure and beautiful voices of the choirs.
