English Rakugo Performance by Katsura Sunshine

Katsura Sunshine, a native of Toronto, and Dr. Chiho Kitagawa performed Rakugo—a traditional Japanese comedic story telling—at the Embassy Auditorium and Carleton University on September 5th and 6th, respectively.  The two shows brought in about 400 guests.

Minister Yawata expressed his delight in how Katsura Sunshine and Dr. Kitagawa have given people abroad the chance to learn and enjoy this aspect of Japanese culture in English.  In the past two years, Katsura Sunshine and Dr. Kitagawa have performed in Ottawa, where they were received fervently.  The pair also has an experience in performing in Singapore and Sri Lanka.

For this year’s performance, Katsura Sunshine presented a traditional Rakugo piece called “The Zoo”, and another one called “The Homework”, written by his master, Katsura Bunshi VI.  The hall was filled with great energy and laughter.

This was the pair’s third show in Ottawa, and this time they came as part of the tour that is taking them to 20 different cities across North America.  The performing tour by these two will continue up to October 5th with a final stop in Toronto.
