A lecture on Japanese Modern Art by an Assistant Professor from Carleton University
On September 11th, Assistant Professor Ming Tiampo (an Art Historian) from Carleton University gave a lecture at the Embassy Auditorium titled “Presenting Japanese Art at the Guggenheim: Gutai: Splendid Playground”. Professor Tiampo talked about the exhibit, “Gutai-Splendid Playground”, which she co-curated at the Guggenheim in New York between February and May this year.
In his opening remarks, Minister Yawata welcomed Professor Tiampo on behalf of the Embassy and expressed pleasure at the opportunity of having a distinguished expert address those in attendance.
In her lecture, Professor Tiampo discussed of the Gutai group, which was founded by Jiro Yoshihara after the Second World War. She outlined the history of the Gutai movement and the universal significance behind them. She also touched on the events organized at the Guggenheim that children could participate in, and she showed a series of pictures of the art work displayed in the exhibit. The audience enjoyed Professor’s Tiampo’s informative lecture, and a lively Question and Answer period followed.
