The Great East Japan Earthquake Commemoration Film Screening

On March 11th, the third anniversary of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the Embassy of Japan hosted a film screening of the documentary “Never Forget Never Give Up”, directed by Toronto-based Japanese director, Ms. Yuki Nakamura. Over 140 people attended the event to view the film and hear from Ms. Nakamura, who came to Ottawa with her assistant, Mr. Ashan Khan, for the event.

At the beginning of the event, a moment of silence was offered for the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

In the opening remarks, Counsellor Mariko Kaneko offered an update of the situation in the devastated area and emphasized that the purpose of this presentation was to highlight the experiences of the people in the disaster-affected regions and show their resilience in the face of adversity. She also thanked the people of Canada for their unwavering support.

During the question and answer session after the film, the audience heard from guests who were in Fukushima participating in the Japan Exchange Teaching Programme when the earthquake occurred and those who had just visited the disaster-affected area. Ms. Nakamura also provided an update of those who were featured in the film, as well as her plans to continue to support the disaster victims.

Ms. Nakamura kindly donated the DVD of “Never Forget Never Give Up” to the Embassy. If you are interested in viewing it, it is available at our Information Culture Centre Library.
