Canada Japan Literary Award Winners

Ruth Ozeki is one of two winners of the 2014 Canada Japan Literary Awards for her book A Tale for the Time Being. A Tale for the Time Being was also nominated for the 2015 International IMPAC Dublin Award and shortlisted for the 2013 ManBooker Prize.

Michel Régnier also won for his book Seize tableaux du Mont Sakurajima. Congratulations! Administered by the Canada Council, these prizes recognize literary excellence by Canadian authors writing on Japan or Japanese themes.

Here’s what the jury had to say about Ms Ozeki’s book:

"Ruth Ozeki's novel, A Tale for the Time Being, impressed us tremendously with its creativity, originality, emotional depth, and for the remarkable verisimilitude with which its characters lived on the page. The dialogue between the characters, across time and geographical distance, and the twining together of their stories, even though they never physically met, created a solid world that demonstrated the best of which fiction is capable: to create empathy within the reader, by showing that empathy within the world of the novel itself. This is a magisterial novel, and one which deserves this award.
