Japan Film Week

From August 31st to September 4th, the Embassy of Japan hosted the 2015 Japanese Film Week at the Embassy’s auditorium. This was the first time the Embassy held a week-long film festival of this kind and it proved to be successful, with more than 600 people came out for the seven different screenings.

As part of this festival, seven films were shown, which covered a vast range of genres and themes. The more recent films from Japan and Ottawa premieres were:  Rent-a-Cat (Naoko Ogigami, 2012), Tug of War! (Nobuo Mizuta, 2012) and Leaving on the 15th Spring (Yasuhiro Yoshida, 2013).

In his remarks preceding the closing lecture and film, the Japanese Embassy’s Minister Karube commented that the audience had a special opportunity to listen to Dr. Vincent Mirza, from the University of Ottawa, provide additional insight into contemporary Japan and the impact of social change on daily life, as depicted in the closing film Leaving on the 15th Spring. The audience was also able to participate in a question and answer period with Dr. Mirza after the screening.
