Documentary Film Screening “Nagatsura: Home without Land”

 

On May 8th, the Embassy of Japan hosted a film screening of the documentary film, “Nagatsura: Home without Land”, directed by Toronto-based Japanese director, Ms. Makiko Ishihara. More than 100 people came out to see this poignant and insightful documentary.

 

The documentary follows Ms. Ishihara’s friend, Ms. Kazuko Moghul, as she travels from Toronto to her hometown of Nagatsura, Ishinomaki-City in Miyagi Prefecture following the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11th, 2011.  After losing her brother and his family in the disaster, she reunites with her family and friends as they work together to overcome their loss.

 

Ms. Ishihara and Ms. Moghul were able to attend the screening at the Embassy, which was part of a multi-city screening tour including Ishinomaki, Tokyo, Asahikawa and Toronto, as well as other cities in Japan and Canada.

 

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Monji thanked Ms. Ishihara and Ms. Moghul for attending the screening and for sharing an important story of community, family and appreciating your homeland in the wake of disaster. He also expressed his appreciation for the people of Canada for their unwavering support as the disaster-affected regions continue their recovery.

 

Following the screening, Ms. Ishihara and Ms. Moghul answered questions about their experience in Japan following the earthquake, as well as the present situation in the devastated areas. Many people in the audience expressed appreciation of their efforts to keep the memory of the disaster alive even after time has passed.
