Japan-Canada 85th anniversary of diplomatic relations commemorative lecture
Women, Work and Marriage in a Time of Social Change in Japan
On March 4th, the Embassy of Japan hosted the second lecture of the 2014-15 Japan Lecture Series, which marks the 85th anniversary of Canada-Japan diplomatic relations. At this installment, we invited Dr. Vincent Mirza, assistant professor at the University of Ottawa, to deliver a lecture entitled “Women, Work and Marriage in a Time of Social Change in Japan.”
Close to 100 people attended to hear Dr. Mirza explain some of the reasons why more and more Japanese women are choosing to delay marriage or forgo marriage entirely, focusing his analysis on women’s desire for self-realization, career and greater participation in society.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Hiroshi Karube, Minister of the Embassy, said that he hopes that this presentation will give participants greater insight into modern Japanese society.
Following the lecture, there was a lively Question and Answer session during which the audience showed their deep interest in the topic through a variety of insightful questions for Dr. Mirza. |
