2016 JET Welcome Back Reception
On November 29th, Ambassador and Mrs. Monji hosted a welcome back reception at their residence for Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET*) participants who recently returned to Canada from Japan this year. The reception was attended by a total of 40 people including 8 JET returnees, along with guests who are involved with the JET Programme.
Followed by Ambassador Monji’s opening remarks, as a representative of this year’s JET returnees, Ms. Nancy Abou-Chahine delivered a speech about her experiences including her involvement in the G7 Ise-Shima Summit in Japan. In her greetings, Ms. Janelle Weibelzahl, President of JETTA Ottawa, offered some advice to JET returnees including keeping in touch with JETAA Ottawa and the Japanese community. After Minister Isomata gave a toast, JET returnees enjoyed Japanese sushi and sake, and shared memories from Japan with guests, including government officials and representatives of the Ottawa Japanese Community.
*The JET Programme is an official Japanese Government scheme aiming to promote international exchange at the grass-roots level and to improve foreign language education in Japan. Participants come from a total of 40 countries. In recent years, approximately 200 Canadians have travelled to Japan each year. The JET Programme started in 1987. Since then more than 8,600 young Canadians participants have gone to Japan to teach English in schools or to engage in international activities in local government.
