Lecture by Dr. Masashi Nishihara, President of the Research Institute for Peace and Security

On March 30, 2011 the Embassy of Japan was pleased to host a lecture delivered by Dr. Masashi Nishihara.

Dr. Nishihara began his talk by outlining the government of Japan’s response to the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country on March 11th. From there he discussed preparations and responses to natural disasters in the wider context of national security policy.

The primary themes of Dr. Nishihara’s lecture were the new National Defense Program Guidelines that were approved by cabinet last December, and the security environment in North-East Asia. He discussed in some detail the ongoing importance of Japan-US alliance, as well as other multilateral security arrangements, to the maintenance of stability in the region.

Before concluding Dr. Nishihara referred to the future of Canada/ Japan relations in the field of peace and security. In doing so he made reference to the “Canada-Japan Joint Declaration on Political, Peace and Security Cooperation” signed by Prime Minister Harper and Prime Minister Kan last November.

The lecture was attended by over 60 people. A lively question and answer session was held following the lecture.
