“Van Gogh: Up Close” at the National Gallery of Canada
From May 25 to September 3, the National Gallery of Canada will be holding a special exhibition entitled “Van Gogh: Up Close.” This exhibition contains more than 40 of Van Gogh’s works from around the world as well as Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and nineteenth-century photographs that greatly influenced his painting style.
It is believed that Van Gogh’s detailed depictions of nature and close-up scenery, which are the theme of this exhibition, were deeply influenced by Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and that he collected more than 400 Japanese woodblock prints in his lifetime. During this special exhibition, approximately 20 Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints will be displayed at the Japan booth.
The official opening of the exhibition was held on May 24. The opening was attended by over 2,000 guests including Japanese participants: some of the sponsors of this exhibition Mr. Keiichi Fujii, President, Shiseido (Canada) Inc.; Ms. Mami Fujii, Deputy Director, The Japan Foundation, Toronto; and Minister Yawata of the Embassy of Japan and his wife.
Throughout this exhibition, special lectures are scheduled to be held. Tsukasa Kōdera, Japanese professor at Osaka University will present a lecture entitled “Van Gogh and Japan: Visions of Utopia” on June 21. We hope that many people will have the chance to visit this exhibition.
