Lecture: Japan and Canada in Today’s East Asian Security Landscape
On February 14, 2017, Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and the Embassy of Japan jointly held a lecture event titled “Japan and Canada in Today’s East Asian Security Landscape” with the support of Global Affairs Canada (GAC). The event was held at GAC and consisted of lectures from Dr. Ryo Sahashi, associate professor at Kanagawa University, and Dr. Stephen Saideman of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. Mr. Christopher Burton, Director of Northeast Asia and Oceania Division, Global Affairs Canada moderated the event.
The event began with opening remarks from Dr. Sarah Taylor, Director General of North Asia and Oceania at Global Affairs Canada, and from H.E. Mr. Kenjiro Monji, Ambassador of Japan to Canada.
Dr. Ryo Sahashi spoke on Japan’s regional security policy, current issues that Japan faces with its neighbours, and what options Japan has to maintain security in the region. Dr. Saideman spoke on the future of international order, and how Japan and Canada can handle relations with the United States under the new Trump administration.
Finally, both speakers responded to questions from the audience, and Dr. Dane Rowlands, Director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs gave closing remarks.
