Meeting with representatives of the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee)
On March 28 2017, the Director of the Embassy of Japan’s Information and Culture Centre, Counsellor Takashi Futagi, met with 14 representatives of the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) to discuss possible collaboration ideas. The representatives first introduced themselves and the communities they represent in Quebec. They discussed the surprising similarities between the Cree nation and the Ainu people of Japan in terms of culture and spirituality with Counsellor Futagi. They also discussed the numerous cultural, touristic, economic and social activities they conduct in their communities. The group has a plan to trip to Hokkaido to meet with the Ainu community in 2018. The Deputy Chief of the Cree Nation of Wemindji, Mr. Frank Atsynia, and Counsellor Futagi proceeded with an exchange of gifts. |
