Virtual School Visit Program (Sep 4)

2021/9/4
On September 4 the Embassy of Japan hosted a book discussion as part of its online School Visit Program. Approximately 5 grade 9 - 12 students enrolled in the International Certificate Program at the Ottawa Carleton District School Board participated in the event by reading “Anne’s Cradle: The Life and Works of Hanako Muraoka, Japanese Translator of Anne of Green Gables” by Eri Muraoka (2021, Nimbus Publishing) and attending the discussion. By participating, students learned about many aspects of Japanese culture and history, including the role of Canadian missionaries in Japan, the women’s rights movement, and the function of translation (both literal and cultural).

The Embassy of Japan’s School Visit Program operates throughout the year and provides many Ottawa and Gatineau students the opportunity to learn about different topics related to Japan in either English or French. This program is usually offered in-person either at the Embassy of Japan or in classroom. However, for measures for COVID-19, it has been offered virtually via Zoom – you can find details of the program here.
