The Japan-Canada Joint Study under the Economic Framework Completed

 

In accordance with the Economic Framework Agreement signed by the Prime Ministers of Japan and Canada in November 2005, the two countries have conducted the Joint Study, and have recently completed their Report. Ambassador Nishida and International Trade Minister Emerson confirmed this in their meeting on 22 October. They welcomed the Report as a comprehensive, concrete and forward-looking one, and resolved to work together to rejuvenate bilateral economic relations based on the Joint Study Report.

 

The structure of the Report is as follows:

Chapter 4: Current Bilateral Economic Collaboration
Chapter 5: Existing Measures Limiting the Full Potential of Trade/Investment
Chapter 6: Implications of the Further Promotion/Liberalization of Trade/Investment
Chapter 7: Summary of Findings

 

Based on the private sector consultations and analysis of the Study, Japan and Canada will pursue or explore the following initiatives.

- Cooperation on their respective Asia Pacific Gateway initiatives
- Investment Promotion and Cooperation, to facilitate capital and information flow
- Updating the Double Taxation Agreement
