Japan Film Week
From August 22nd to 26th, the Embassy of Japan hosted a Japanese Film Week at the Embassy’s auditorium for the second consecutive year. Drawing from last year’s success, the event attracted about 440 people over the screening of 5 different movies.
Five movies were screened during the Film Week, covering a wide range of genres and themes. Two animated movies The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)and Summer Wars (2009) from the director Mamoru Hosoda as well as 3 live-action movies Sue, Mai & Sawa (Osamu Minorikawa, 2012), Au Revoir l’Été (Koji Fukada, 2013) and Round-trip Heart (Yuki Tanada, 2015) were presented to cater to a varied audience.
In his opening remarks preceding Monday’s screening, the Director of the Embassy’s Information and Culture Centre, Counsellor Futagi, reminded the audience that the Japanese movie industry is amongst the oldest and largest in the world. He also noted that with each movie lies the opportunity to better understand one’s society and culture.
The Embassy will co-host the 34th Japan Film Festival with the Canadian Film Institute on November 4th and 5th at Carleton University.
