Otakuthon 2016

On August 6th and 7th, Ambassador and Mrs. Monji visited Montreal and participated in Otakuthon, Quebec’s largest Japanese pop-culture event, with Mr. Hideaki Kuramitsu, Consul-General of Japan in Montreal, and his spouse.

While at Otakuthon, they took the opportunity to explore some of the many booths and events which exhibited Japanese manga and anime. They also attended a traditional Japanese stage performance presented by performers from Hiroshima Prefecture. Furthermore, Ambassador Monji delivered remarks at a tourism symposium organized by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). During the two-day event, the annual Canadian national preliminaries of the World Cosplay Summit and the Otakuthon Masquerade also took place.

The number of participants to Otakuthon has been expanding every year which is reflecting the increasing fascination with Japan through Japanese pop culture.
