The event began with opening remarks from Minister Karube. He spoke about the impact of Abenomics and Japan’s role in international cooperation towards solving global issues.

Dr. Westra gave a detailed overview of Japan’s role in the global economy, post-1945 to the current day. He described how Japan has reshaped its economy several times and discussed the ways that it might be reshaped again in the future.

Finally, Dr. Westra took questions from the audience. Some of the topics covered included the roles of disruptive technologies, intellectual property rights, and the demographics of Japan in the modern economic system.
