“Ruch and Norie” Film Screening
On December 3rd, the Embassy of Japan and the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia jointly held a film screening of “Ruch and Norie”. This Latvian documentary features the friendship between Norie, a Japanese student, who travels to Latvia to study the Suiti community, and one of the oldest Suiti women, Ruch.
About 120 people from the Ottawa region Latvian and Japanese communities among others attended the event. They had the opportunity to network and sample Japanese sake and sushi rolls and Latvian Black Balsam liqueur and snacks during a pre-screening reception and to visit the booths promoting tourism in Japan and in Latvia.
In their opening remarks, Ambassador Monji and Ambassador Karlis Eihenbaums of the Republic of Latvia praised the documentary for explaining the role intercultural person-to-person exchanges play in promoting mutual understanding between people. They also noted the timeliness of this event as 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of bilateral relations between Japan and the Republic of Latvia.
The heart-warming documentary was widely appreciated by the audience who was moved by the surprisingly strong bond that links both women.
