Symposium: Maternal and Child Health Handbook Initiative

On October 29th, the Bruyère Research Institute and the Embassy of Japan collaborated in organizing a symposium on the topic of the Japan-initiated ‘Maternal and Child Health Handbook Initiative’. The symposium was held as a part of the Canadian Conference on Global Health at the Ottawa Marriott Hotel. Speakers included Dr. Yasuhide Nakamura, professor emeritus of the University of Osaka, Dr. Shafi Bhuiyan of the University of Toronto, and Professor Janet Roberts, Co-Director of the WHO collaborating center.

The event began with opening remarks from Minister Yasunari Morino, representing the Embassy of Japan, and from Dr. Heidi Sveistrup, Interim CEO of the Bruyère Research Institute.

Dr. Nakamura spoke of his involvement in the early development and implementation of the MCH Handbook in Japan in 1948, and later in Indonesia. Dr. Bhuiyan spoke about expanding the MCH Handbook to Bangladesh. Ms. Roberts situated the MCH Handbook within a larger health-systems approach. Following their presentations there was an active question and answer session.

The following day, on October 30th, Dr. Nakamura and Dr. Bhuiyan gave a lecture on the MCH Handbook to students at the University of Ottawa.
