Sogestu Ikebana Exhibition: Autumn Symphony

On October 3rd and 4th, the Sogetsu School of Ikebana Ottawa Branch held its annual exhibition at the Embassy of Japan. During the two-day exhibit, more than 470 visitors came to view the various flower arrangements, attracting both long-time Ikebana enthusiasts and new-comers to the art-form.

This year’s theme was “Autumn Symphony.” Ms. Jane Metcalfe, Director of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Ottawa, and Ms. Nancy Sharp, Exhibition Chair, delivered opening remarks. Representing the Embassy of Japan was Minister Hiroshi Karube. In his opening remarks, Minister Karube observed that by highlighting Canadian species of flora in the arrangements, the exhibition created a unique fusion of Canadian and Japanese culture. He further noted that this event serves as a perfect example of the way culture can be adapted to include new influences while respecting traditional techniques and practices.

Members created autumn-color arrangements drawing inspiration from different autumn-themed pieces of music. The works were created using a free-form style of arranging flowers, with each arrangement reflecting the individual members’ style and personality. With its unique fusion of floral arrangements and music, the exhibit captivated visitors and evoked new interest in Ikebana in Ottawa.
