The Embassy of Japan’s participation in the Ottawa Asian Film Festival
On May 29th, the Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the Ottawa Japanese Community Association (OJCA) screened the “Fukushima Hula Girls” at the Ottawa Asian Film Festival at Ben Franklin Chambers, 101 Centrepointe. The Fukushima Hula Girls is a documentary following a group of hula dancers as they tour Japan to renew interest in the Spa Resort Hawaiians that had been damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. The documentary brings the evacuees’ resilience to light in their struggle to rebuild their region.
In his opening remarks, Minister Karube expressed Japan’s gratitude for the outpouring of support received from the International society for the Great East Japan Earthquake, as well as the recent earthquake in Kyushu region, centred in Kumamoto.
While movies submitted for the Asian Film Festival were being screened, the Embassy of Japan organized a booth showcasing Japan’s culture and tourism.
The Asian Film Festival is an annual event organized by the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society which aims to share Asian and Asian-Canadian heritage in the National Capital region.
