Radio Interview and Lecture by Ambassador Monji on Japanese Saké

On the evening of October 12th, 2016, restaurant ‘steak & sushi’ hosted a saké tasting event, “Kampai! A Date with Saké.” The event was organized by the owner of the restaurant, Mr. Lee Wagner, who had attended the Embassy’s Saké Lecture on September 29th.

Prior to this event, Ambassador Monji, along with Mr. Wagner and Chef Paul Brennan, joined CBC Radio’s D is for Dinner on All in a Day to promote the event. They brought three kinds of saké and three dishes which complement them. The radio hosts were able to taste them during the interview. Ambassador Monji explained the title of ‘Saké Samurai,’ which he was awarded by the Japan Saké brewers Association Junior Council, as well as explaining what motivates him to promote saké and how to pair Japanese saké with Japanese and Western dishes.

In the evening, Ambassador Monji gave a lecture on Japanese saké at the stake & sushi restaurant at Mr. Wagner’s request. The Ambassador explained about brewing, classifications and handling saké. Then he talked about how to taste saké with participants during the tasting session.

As more and more people are becoming interested in Japanese saké recently, about 60 people attended this event, including those who had learned about it from the radio show. Participants enjoyed 22 various kinds of saké, which were served alongside the restaurant’s sushi.

After the lecture, Ambassador Monji answered questions from the participants concerning how to drink saké and the characteristics of the saké that were served that evening.

Participants commented that they appreciated the opportunity to learn about the brewing process and how to taste the subtleties of Japanese saké and that they hope Japanese saké will be made more readily available in Canada.
