2017 Japan Training Squadron Visit to Canada

Two ships of the Japanese Training Squadron, 'KASHIMA’ and ‘HARUSAME’, made a port call to North Vancouver from Saturday, September 16 to Wednesday, September 20, as a part of an around the world training cruise by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).

The purpose of this overseas training cruise was to develop the seamanship of 200 newly commissioned officers, to cultivate their abilities as future leaders, and also to promote mutual understanding and goodwill with the countries they visit.

During the port call, a variety of events, such as an open day on the KASHIMA, floral tribute placed at war memorials, a performance by the musical band of the Squadron, Japanese traditional drumming, a Kendo (Japanese fencing) demonstration and friendship events with Canadian Navy, were held, which promoted relationships between Japan and Canada.

Ambassador Monji co-hosted a reception with Rear Admiral Manabe, Commander of the Squadron, and delivered a lecture to the 200 trainees on defence and security issues.
